Yestermorrow

by Ray Bradbury, Yestermorrow Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Yestermorrow books, The visionary science fiction author of Fahrenheit 451 shares his imaginative visions of the future in this collection of musings and memoirs. Combining a series of recollections alongside his personal contemplation about the future, protean master of storytelling Ray Bradbury outlines his thoughts on the state of the world—how the past and present are reflected in society, technology, art, literature, and popular culture—as well as the need for creative thinkers to be the architects of the future. In this extraordinary collection of essays, poetry, and philosophical reflection, readers glimpse inside the mind of one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated and prolific authors. Bradbury reveals the creative sparks that led to some of his most well-known and enthralling stories, along with the influences on his journey to becoming a prominent figure in modern literature. Part journal, part commentary, these writings are an exploration and celebration of a dreamer whose ideas had no bounds.

Download Yestermorrow books, INTRODUCING YESTERMORROWYestermorrow is a futuristic novel about human life on earth between the years 2055 and 2098. It concerns a group of families living in the UK as members of the climate transition movement founded in south Devon, who aim to live as sustainably as possible. In Part I, a young schoolteacher sets his class a project exploring the run-up to a tidal disaster, which happened in their area twenty-three years earlier, in 2030. The students discover that the damage being done to the planet was well understood at the time, but that those in power failed to be responsive enough to the numerous concerns. These students are shocked to realise that their generation is being left to deal with multiple problems relating to climate change, which have been made far worse by human activity. In Part 2, there are exchange visits between keen environmentalists living in south-west and central England who compare what is being done in cities to what is happening in the countryside. Anxieties run high between climate change refugees and those in wealthier places who still want to enjoy an exploitative way of life. Rory Whiteoak and his African fiancée, Amina, struggle with stern regulations threatening their marriage, against a backdrop of both race riots and positive multicultural activities. In Part 3, Rory, Amina and Beatrice have become schoolteachers themselves and also leaders in helping to build communities that are cooperative and resilient. Nations have woken up to the failures and are striving to build a positive world against a darkening background of hurricanes, snow blizzards and floods. Lessons learned in past years shine a light on possibilities for tomorrow, but tragedies have to be faced. In Part 4, there are new generations of children and grandchildren, and the journey continues as they face the dawn of a new century. Vision quests held in many parts of the world raise new hopes as people begin to rediscover some ancientpathways through the web of life on earth.

Design Build With Jersey Devil

by Charlie Hailey, Design Build With Jersey Devil Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Design Build With Jersey Devil books, Steve Badanes, Jim Adamson, and John Ringel believe an architect's job does not stop at designing a building, but that it extends to constructing it as well. Now working into their fifth decade, Jersey Devil, the loose-knit group they founded in 1972, bands together under this design/build ethos that an architect's place is just as much on the job site as it is at the drawing board. The trio pioneered design/build practice and their influence has spawned more than one hundred design/build programs. Jersey Devil's process and expertise are unpacked in this Architecture Brief, providing students and teachers with a toolkit for design/build education. Through stories, didactic commentary, and sample exercises, the Design/Build complements nuts-and-bolts content with Jersey Devil's philosophy and perspective, allowing the book to impart practical instruction while acting as a valuable guide for navigating the elusive challenges of design/build. Themes touch on socially responsible architecture, intuition and intentionality, detailing and fostering craftsmanship, group work and collaboration, off-the-shelf components and nonstandard applications, educational reform, ethos and risk, good life and play, the politics of building, and university-community relations.

Learning By Building

by William J. Carpenter, Learning By Building Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Learning By Building books, Learning by Building challenges today’s architects and students to experience the energy and creativity of construction. Based on the example of famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, who considered construction an integral part of the design process, "design-build" is standard practice in growing numbers of today’s architecture firms. Architect and professor William J. Carpenter explores ways to integrate construction into architectural education, bridging the gap between theory and practice—between designing and building. Mr. Carpenter traces the history of construction in architectural education, from medieval times, to Jefferson’s Monticello, to the German Bauhaus. He cites twentieth-century artists such as Richard Serra and Donald Judd, whose work is generated by the process of making; like the artist, "the architect should be immersed in the potential of construction." Ten in-depth case studies of schools that have incorporated design-build into their curriculum illustrate how construction studios help future architects learn real-life pragmatics and collaboration. Through text and photographs, Mr. Carpenter recounts the diverse experiences of high-profile schools such as Cranbrook and Yale University, providing models for other schools that wish to include design-build in their curriculums. Mr. Carpenter also gives a helpful outline of the practical details involved in design-build, such as team issues, legal issues, and built applications of the process. Learning by Building is a wake-up call to architects and students alike to immerse themselves in the process of architecture—to rediscover, or witness for the first time, the excitement of building.

The Greening Of Architecture

by Phillip James Tabb, The Greening Of Architecture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Greening Of Architecture books, Contemporary architecture, and the culture it reflects dependent as it is on fossil fuels, has contributed to the cause and necessity of a burgeoning green process that emerged over the past half century. This text is the first to offer a comprehensive critical history and analysis of the greening of architecture through accumulative reduction of negative environmental effects caused by buildings, urban designs and settlements. Describing the progressive development of green architecture from 1960 to 2010, it illustrates how it is ever evolving and ameliorated through alterations in form, technology, materials and use and it examines different places worldwide that represent a diversity of cultural and climatic contexts. The book is divided into seven chapters: with an overview of the environmental issues and the nature of green architecture in response to them, followed by an historic perspective of the pioneering evolution of green technology and architectural integration over the past five decades, and finally, providing the intransigent and culturally pervasive current examples within a wide range of geographic territories. The greening of architecture is seen as an evolutionary process that is informed by significant world events, climate change, environmental theories, movements in architecture, technological innovations, and seminal works in architecture and planning throughout each decade over the past fifty years. This time period is bounded on one end by the awareness of environmental problems beginning in the 1960's, the influential texts by Rachel Carson, E.F. Schumacher, Buckminster Fuller and Steward Brand, and the impact of the OPEC Oil Embargo of 1973, and on the other end the pervasiveness of the necessary greening of architecture that includes, systemic reforms in architectural and urban design, land use planning, transportation, agriculture, and energy production found in the 2000's. The greening process moves from remediation to holistic models of architecture. Geographical landscapes give a global account of the greening process where some examples are parallel and sympathetic, and others are in clear contrast to one another with very individuated approaches. Certain events, like the Rio Summit in 1992 and Kyoto Protocol in 1997, and themes, such as the Hannover Principles in 2000, provide a dynamic ideological critique as well as a formal and technical discussion of the embodied and accumulative content of greening principles in architecture.
