Tropes And Territories

by Marta Dvorak, Tropes And Territories Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Tropes And Territories books, Tropes and Territories demonstrates how current debates in postcolonial criticism bear on the reading, writing, and status of short fiction. These debates, which hinge on competing definitions of "trope" (motif vs rhetorical turn) and "territory" (political or aesthetic), lead to studies of space, place, influence, and writing and reading practices across cultural divides. The essays also explore the character of diasporic writing, the cultural significance of oral tale-telling, and interconnections between socio/political issues and strategies of style.

Ao Toa

by Cathie Dunsford, Ao Toa Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Ao Toa books, What happens when a group of scientists take creation into their own hands? 'Ao Toa' is that rare novel -- an eco-thriller combining action and suspense with deep emotions and the sensual power of the natural world. It is peopled with believable women and men, teenagers and elders, suits and activists, farmers and gardeners. As they grapple with concerns ranging from sick children and indigenous medicines to toxic sprays and genetic engineering, they encounter the realities of corruption, politics and power. Fired with her passion for life, food and challenge, Cowrie and her friends take on multinational corporations and government over the issue of genetically modified crops. Blending Maori tradition with feminist insight, the novel explores ways of right living. The richly realised texture of daily life expresses fundamental conflicts over food security, the care of the environment and the morality of science. The writing is irreverent, funny and fresh, catching the authentic tone and flavour of today's global debates as they play out at a local level.

Women And Leadership Around The World

by Faith Wambura Ngunjiri, Women And Leadership Around The World Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Women And Leadership Around The World books, Women and Leadership around the World is the third volume in a new series of books (Women and Leadership: Research, Theory, and Practice) that will is now being published to inform leadership scholars and practitioners. The purpose of this volume is to explore areas of women’s leadership in four regions around the world: the Middle East, Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific. Hence, we have included 14 chapters that cover a wide range of important topics relevant to women and leadership within specific contexts around the world. Our goal for this volume is to provide readers with explorations of women’s experiences as leaders, including recent research studies, analysis and interpretation of statistics unpacking the status of women in various sectors and countries, stories of influential women leaders with national or local spheres of influence, and including recommendations for positive change to increase women’s access to positions of authority. The volume contributors use various theories and conceptualizations to problematize, historicize, and analyze women’s limited access to power, and their agency as leaders from the grassroots to the national scene, from education to nonprofits and business organizations. Overall, the book contributes interpretations of the status of women in various countries, presenting the stories behind the numbers and statistics and uncovering not only challenges but also opportunities for resiliency and effectiveness as leaders. The authors offer recommendations for change that cross national boundaries, such as structural changes in organizations that would open the door for more women to access positions of authority and be effective as leaders. It is rare to find a book with such a diverse array of topics and countries, making this a timely contribution to the literature on women and leadership. The authors remind us to continue to expand the literature base on women and leadership, drawing from both qualitative and quantitative studies as well as conceptual explorations of women as leaders in different countries, regions, indigenous communities, and across different sectors. The more we know, the better informed will be our efforts to create appropriate leadership development activities and experiences for emerging women leaders and girls around the world. This book contributes significantly to that very effort.

Writing At The Edge Of The Universe

by Mark Williams, Writing At The Edge Of The Universe Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Writing At The Edge Of The Universe books, WRITING AT THE EDGE OF THE UNIVERSE looks at New Zealand literature at a time when it is thriving as never before. For many years a marginal activity in a country where sheep and rugby concentrated the national vision, writing is now generously supported by the government, promoted with festivals, and showered with awards. Writers are made national treasures, their manuscripts acquired by libraries, their lives made the subjects of biographies. When our major writers die the whole nation mourns. This book celebrates the maturity that places writing at the centre rather than the outskirts of national life and marks the coming of age of New Zealand literature. But it also examines and questions the contentious issues about the state of our writing: the power of the creative writing programme, the globalising influence of the publishing industry and international styles, the directions of Maori writing, the place of nationalism in creative activity, the importance of state funding. It marks the broadening of the literary scene with examinations of children's writing and comics. Lively, various, contentious, considered - the essays in this book will deepen and extend the debates about our literary culture, provide considered information for teachers, students and writers, and enrich the production of that literature.

Cultural Institutions Of The Novel

by Deidre Lynch, Cultural Institutions Of The Novel Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Cultural Institutions Of The Novel books, The story of the development of the novel—its origin, rise, and increasing popularity as a narrative form in an ever-expanding range of geographic and cultural sites—is familiar and, according to the contributors to this volume, severely limited. In a far-reaching blend of comparative literature and transnational cultural studies, this collection shifts the study of the novel away from a consideration of what makes a particular narrative a novel to a consideration of how novels function and what cultural work they perform—from what novels are, to what they do. The essays in Cultural Institutions of the Novel find new ways to analyze how a genre notorious for its aesthetic unruliness has become institutionalized—defined, legitimated, and equipped with a canon. With a particular focus on the status of novels as commodities, their mediation of national cultures, and their role in transnational exchange, these pieces range from the seventeenth century to the present and examine the forms and histories of the novel in England, Nigeria, Japan, France, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. Works by Jane Austen, Natsume Sôseki, Gabriel García Márquez, Buchi Emecheta, and Toni Morrison are among those explored as Cultural Institutions of the Novel investigates how theories of “the” novel and disputes about which narratives count as novels shape social struggles and are implicated in contests over cultural identity and authority. Challenging the notion that the novel is a Western franchise, examining the ways that novels navigate between cultures, and offering new ways to think about novels, this is a pivotal and indispensable volume for student, scholar, and teacher alike. Contributors. Susan Z. Andrade, Lauren Berlant, Homer Brown, Michelle Burnham, James A. Fujii, Nancy Glazener, Dane Johnson, Lisa Lowe, Deidre Lynch, Jann Matlock, Dorothea von Mücke, Bridget Orr, Clifford Siskin, Katie Trumpener, William B. Warner
