The Care And Handling Of Art Objects

by Marjorie Shelley, The Care And Handling Of Art Objects Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Care And Handling Of Art Objects books, The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive collections of works of art from antiquities to modern and contemporary material. Their preservation is a responsibility shared by the many individuals employed at the Museum who oversee and have direct contact with the collection on a daily basis. The Care and Handing of Art Objects—first published in the 1940s and continually updated—offers a guide to the best practices in handling and preserving works of art while on display, in storage and in transit. It explains many of the fundamental principles of conservation that underlie these methods. One of its goals is to make the complexities of caring for a collection readily accessible. The first part offers basic guidelines for the preservation of the diverse types of materials and art objects found in the Met. Each chapter addresses the physical characteristics specific to the particular category, and the environmental, handling and housing factors to which one should be alert to prevent damage and ensure their preservation. Written by experts in the respective specialty, it addresses the Museum’s vast holdings summarizing the most critical preservation issues, many of which are amplified by photographs. As the table of contents makes evident these range from paintings on canvas and works on paper and photographs to furniture and objects made of stone, wood and metals to arms and armor, upholstery, ethnographic materials and many others. Part II succinctly describes factors that affect the collection as a whole: among them, current environmental standards for temperature, relative humidity, light exposure, storage and art in transit. Based on Museum protocols it addresses emergency preparedness and response, and integrated pest management. For easy reference, it includes charts on storage and display conditions, on factors contributing to deterioration, and a glossary of conservation terms, principles, and housing materials referenced in the individual chapters. Drawing upon the knowledge of conservators, scientists, and curators from many different departments, as well as technicians and engineers whose expertise crosses boundaries of culture, chronology, medium and condition, The Care and Handing of Art Objects is primarily directed to staff at the Met. It is, no less, an invaluable resource for students, collectors, small museums, museum study programs, art dealers, and members of the public who want to enhance their understanding of how works of art are safeguarded and the role environment, handling and materials play in making this possible.

Understanding Art

by Martin Wenham, Understanding Art Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Understanding Art books, In any area of the curriculum, children need to learn concepts, facts and skills through first-hand experience. In art, such learning depends on exploring and experimenting with the visual language through which artists communicate, and the visual elements such as line, colour and shape. The National Curriculum places strong emphasis on experimenting with and applying the visual elements. This book systematically explores the basic knowledge needed to do this effectively. The author deals with the visual elements of art, their properties, how they are related, and especially with the ways in which children's knowledge of each can be developed through simple but creative activities. Each element is placed in context, with extensive cross-referencing. The author shows how these elements can be observed in the children's environment and provides examples of how they have been used in works of art and craft. This accessible book does not assume any specialist knowledge or experience. It is essential for teachers at primary and secondary levels, art co-ordinators and for undergraduate and postgraduate level students of art education. Martin Wenham is an artist, calligrapher and stone carver who has exhibited at the Craft's Council. He has taught at the University of Leicester and has over twenty years' experience of teaching in primary and secondary schools.

The Art Of Understanding Art

by Hugh Moss, The Art Of Understanding Art Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Art Of Understanding Art books, Have we completely missed the point of the modern western revolution in the arts? Hugh Moss thinks so, and here he presents a refreshingly original and thought-provoking new approach to understanding art. It not only makes sense of western art over the past century or more, but applies equally to the art of any culture at any time, all within one enlightening framework that, well ... works. This new perspective is impossible to ignore - a theory that places art right at the centre of the evolution of human consciousness, as a key driver of the process. Argued with intelligence, panache and wit, The Art of Understanding Art provides a delightfully entertaining read that will change the way you think about and look at art, whether you are a collector (or would like to be), a connoisseur, an academic, a student or of course an artist (or would like to be). It is illustrated with intriguing skill, depth and humour by Peter Suart.

Producing Indonesia

by Eric Tagliacozzo, Producing Indonesia Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Producing Indonesia books, The 26 scholars contributing to this volume have helped shape the field of Indonesian studies over the last three decades. They represent a broad geographic background—Indonesia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Canada—and have studied in a wide array of key disciplines—anthropology, history, linguistics and literature, government and politics, art history, and ethnomusicology. Together they reflect on the "arc of our field," the development of Indonesian studies over recent tumultuous decades. They consider what has been achieved and what still needs to be accomplished as they interpret the groundbreaking works of their predecessors and colleagues. This volume is the product of a lively conference sponsored by Cornell University, with contributions revised following those interactions. Not everyone sees the development of Indonesian studies in the same way. Yet one senses—and this collection confirms—that disagreements among its practitioners have fostered a vibrant, resilient intellectual community. Contributors discuss photography and the creation of identity, the power of ethnic pop music, cross-border influences on Indonesian contemporary art, violence in the margins, and the shadows inherent in Indonesian literature. These various perspectives illuminate a diverse nation in flux and provide direction for its future exploration.

Contributors to this volume explore how the sense of touch can be utilized in cultural institutions to facilitate understanding and learning.

Meet Your Artistic And Athletic Mind

by Mark Abraham, Meet Your Artistic And Athletic Mind Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Meet Your Artistic And Athletic Mind books, The Interactions Between Instinct and Intellect and its Impact on Human Behavior Length: 324 Pages The oldest musical instrument found is a flute made of bone that is estimated to be over 50,000 years old. Aristotle wrote the first book on arts, poetics. Since then it has been debated what art is at the highest levels. However, the world of philosophy admits that we still have not been able to articulate a definition for this seemingly simple word of art that would be acceptable to all. This shows that we do not understand it well enough to properly define it. This confusion stems from an inadequate philosophical understanding of it and, thus, we have been relishing that, which we do not comprehend. One of the reasons for this lasting confusion stems from the fact that we try to understand arts by studying art objects in the physical world. However, without being able to identify what in the mind longs for art in its metaphysical realm and why, we will never grasp it. This is why we have been mixing novel, painting, music, acting, perfume, architecture, Persian rugs and poetry and so on and try to devise a definition to define them all. Although they all are art, they have nothing in common. This shows but a small fraction of our profound misconception of the world of art. Based on what mental force longs for which group of arts coupled with the structure of the art forms, they divide into three distinct and logical categories of 1- Rhythmic Arts, 2- Imitative Arts, and 3- Abstract Arts. Each of these categories connects with a particular mental faculty. Then, through this understanding we also get to see that there exists an inequity in the sensitivity and excitability of these corresponding mental faculties and we experience different intensities of pleasure from different arts. For example, some arts, like live music performed even by average artists will invoke emotions in many who may scream, cry and even faint at concerts, but they never react that way by observing the works of true masters of arts such as Michelangelo, Picasso or others in museums. This results form the imparity in the sensitivities of the corresponding mental faculties mentioned above. This view carries us deep into arts as a phenomenon and helps artists to further refine their arts and the art lovers to appreciate it even more. In the realm of sports, we learn that all sports have three things in common, aiming, speed and power or endurance. Yet these are the skills required for successful hunting. Hunting and warring is one of the male instincts as they acted these responsibilities through out the human evolution. Because instincts do not disappear in time, they have survived and find expression in different sports, and thus aiming, speed and power find their way into all sports. Females not being pressed by this instinct did not hunt or fight wars. It is for these organic reasons that males so readily become sport fanatics at the dismay of the women in their lives.
