The Disappointment Room

by Dee Phelps, The Disappointment Room Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Disappointment Room books, The tale centers on Madeline Knight's decision to abandon her disappointing [infant]son to the care of Munday, the nurturing "Big House" slave. Munday becomes Charles' surrogate mother, and her daughter, Helen, is Charles' only childhood companion. The author skillfully weaves in historical details about slavery, plantation life, national and regional politics as well as a little romance and intrigue. The Southern drawl and slaves' Gullah dialect add authenticity, as does the presence of witchcraft and other cultural details about slaves and their privileged owners. Some strategic twists and turns hold the reader's interest, and the characters--with the exception of the status-seeking, power-hungry Madeline--earn the reader's empathy. Charles, Munday and Helen leave South Carolina for Boston, via war-torn Washington, D.C., where Charles confronts his long-lost mother. This bold step releases him to pursue freedom with his true family. The trio rejoice at their arrival in Boston, but racial segregation and second-class status dim their hope for freedom. Despite his happy marriage to Helen, Charles remains enslaved by dreams of returning to Coffin Point. Their experience brings readers to a new understanding of freedom nudging us to examine our own forms of slavery--to possessions, power and status. (Kirkus Review, 2012). This exciting tale ends generations later when the only surviving heir of Coffin Point, a boy also named Charles, loses his biological parents and is adopted by yet another power-hungry woman who gets Charles' adoption record released and begins her journey to blackmail, lie and cheat to become sole owner of the old plantation house and land. There is excellent intricate weaving of deja vu and familial history repeating itself. A very pleasurable, satisfying read.

And Then We Grew Up

by Rachel Friedman, And Then We Grew Up Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download And Then We Grew Up books, One of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of 2019 A journey through the many ways to live an artistic life—from the flashy and famous to the quiet and steady—full of unexpected insights about creativity and contentment, from the author of The Good Girl’s Guide to Getting Lost. Rachel Friedman was a serious violist as a kid. She quit music in college but never stopped fantasizing about what her life might be like if she had never put down her bow. Years later, a freelance writer in New York, she again finds herself struggling with her fantasy of an artist’s life versus its much more complicated reality. In search of answers, she decides to track down her childhood friends from Interlochen, a prestigious arts camp she attended, full of aspiring actors, artists, dancers, and musicians, to find out how their early creative ambitions have translated into adult careers, relationships, and identities. Rachel’s conversations with these men and women spark nuanced revelations about creativity and being an artist: that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing, that success isn’t always linear, that sometimes it’s okay to quit. And Then We Grew Up is for anyone who has given up a childhood dream and wondered “what-if?”, for those who have aspired to do what they love and had doubts along the way, and for all whose careers fall somewhere between emerging and established. Warm, whip-smart, and insightful, it offers inspiration for finding creative fulfillment wherever we end up in life.

Beyond The Disappointment Of Sex

by Margaret Christie-Brown, Beyond The Disappointment Of Sex Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Beyond The Disappointment Of Sex books, This book is about partnership problems and the difficulties which come with commitment and marriage. It analyzes the origins of those problems, common and less common, and leads the reader along a path from understanding to the possibility of resolution. The author, an expert in the field, addresses the part played by sexual difficulties, which often arise in long-term relationships but receive little recognition in a society swamped with images of idealized sexuality. Indeed massive exposure to sexual ideals in the media produces an inevitable sense of comparative failure in many people. With divorce now so commonplace, marriage more than ever requires the "glue" of sexual satisfaction to heal conflict and keep love viable. The author's approach is to show how satisfaction in a partnership depends on understanding both the emotional intricacies of promising to share a life together, and the way these complex issues affect sexual responses - and vice versa. Dr Christie-Brown explores the way individuals bring unconscious demands and unrealistic expectations from the past into their partnerships; unless these are understood, conflict can result. A Tug of War model is used to illustrate the various conflicts that engaging with a partner can bring. The book is aimed at the open-minded reader who is prepared to look at their partnership problems in a new light; complex emotional issues are dealt with in an accessible way. It is also an essential tool for counselors, doctors, social workers and all those involved in psychotherapy; it combines - in a unique but tried and tested manner - analytical and behavioral disciplines to produce an effective remedy.--"Fully aware of the dimensions and dangers of the partnership and marriage minefield, this eminent and highly experienced therapist expertly elucidates the pleasures and excitements of a healthy and vigorous sexual life, and its contribution to our own personal well being and to the stability of our intimate relationships." Earl Hopper, Ph.D., Former President of the International Association of Group Psychotherapy--..".a valuable addition to the literature in this somewhat neglected field. It will be of interest to GPs, gynaecologists and family planning doctors, particularly those with an interest in psychosexual medicine. It will also be of value to relationship counsellors..." The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist---"Offers an overview of the dimensions and dangers of the partnership and marriage 'minefield'. The author looks at love and the family, 'gender dialect', and fertility and infertility. She concludes with a detailed scheme (involving commitment, planning, and timing) for bringing about an improved sexual experience." Choice

Three Rooms

by Jo Hamya, Three Rooms Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Three Rooms books, A piercing howl of a novel about one young woman's endless quest for an apartment of her own and the aspirations and challenges faced by the Millennial generation as it finds its footing in the world, from a shockingly talented debut author. "A woman must have money and a room of one's own." So said Virginia Woolf in her classic A Room of One's Own, but in this scrupulously observed, gorgeously wrought debut novel, Jo Hamya pushes that adage powerfully into the twenty-first century, to a generation of people living in rented rooms. What a woman needs now is an apartment of her own, the ultimate mark of financial stability, unattainable for many. Set in one year, Three Rooms follows a young woman as she moves from a rented room at Oxford, where she's working as a research assistant; to a stranger's sofa, all she can afford as a copyediting temp at a society magazine; to her childhood home, where she's been forced to return, jobless, even a room of her own out of reach. As politics shift to nationalism, the streets fill with protestors, and news drip-feeds into her phone, she struggles to live a meaningful life on her own terms, unsure if she'll ever be able to afford to do so.
