Jesus In Asia

by R. S. Sugirtharajah, Jesus In Asia Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Jesus In Asia books, Reconstructions of Jesus occurred in Asia long before the Western search for the historical Jesus began in earnest. This enterprise sprang up in seventh-century China and seventeenth-century India, encouraged by the patronage and openness of the Chinese and Indian imperial courts. While the Western quest was largely a Protestant preoccupation, in Asia the search was marked by its diversity: participants included Hindus, Jains, Muslims, Catholics, and members of the Church of the East. During the age of European colonialism, Jesus was first seen by many Asians as a tribal god of the farangis, or white Europeans. But as his story circulated, Asians remade Jesus, at times appreciatively and at other times critically. R. S. Sugirtharajah demonstrates how Buddhist and Taoist thought, combined with Christian insights, led to the creation of the Chinese Jesus Sutras of late antiquity, and explains the importance of a biography of Jesus composed in the sixteenth-century court of the Mughal emperor Akbar. He also brings to the fore the reconstructions of Jesus during the Chinese Taiping revolution, the Korean Minjung uprising, and the Indian and Sri Lankan anti-colonial movements. In Jesus in Asia, Sugirtharajah situates the historical Jesus beyond the narrow confines of the West and offers an eye-opening new chapter in the story of global Christianity.

An Asian Harvest

by Paul Hattaway, An Asian Harvest Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download An Asian Harvest books, Leaving home and his native New Zealand aged 16, Paul Hattaway found himself in Australia, homeless, hungry, and lonely, sleeping on the roof of a public bathroom. “A waste of oxygen” was his high school principal’s assessment. After a fellow factory worker helped him to find faith, he quickly became convinced that God was calling him to China and in 1988 Paul arrived in Hong Kong with nothing more than a backpack, a single contact, and $50. He began work as a Bible courier, carrying hundreds at a time across the Chinese border under the noses of the guards. Today Paul Hattaway leads Asia Harvest, the ministry he founded, which supports thousands of indigenous missionaries and has supplied over 10 million Bibles to China and millions more to Christians throughout Asia. An Asian Harvest is his astonishing story.

The Non Western Jesus

by M. E. Brinkman, The Non Western Jesus Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Non Western Jesus books, The centre of gravity of contemporary Christianity has shifted to the southern hemisphere where, with the exception of Latin America, almost all Christians are minorities in their home countries. Christians in Asia live amongst Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Shamanist or Taoist majorities and this context shapes the local Christian theology. The same is true in Africa where traditional religions and beliefs influence African Christians. Central to this change in both Africa and Asia is the creation of a new Jesus, one who accretes local beliefs and concerns and who, in that process, is transformed. 'The Non-Western Jesus' reveals how a new theology - with its own images and concepts - is coming into being. A wide range of embodiments of Jesus is examined: Jesus as 'Avatara' and 'Guru' in the Indian context; as 'Bodhisattva' in the Buddhist context; and Jesus within Asian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, African and Indonesian religious contexts.

Mission In Context In Search Of Asian Strategic Communication Of The Gospel

by Thang Deih Lian Davidlianno, Mission In Context In Search Of Asian Strategic Communication Of The Gospel Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Mission In Context In Search Of Asian Strategic Communication Of The Gospel books, There is a profusion of missional issues emerging in the Asian fields that call Christ's followers to actively witnessing the Truth. Missionaries from different continents have come to serve the Asian nations, and yet, these God's loving missionaries' effectiveness often seem to have left in the shade by some damaging fruits and (sometimes) being too much of Westernness stemming from a diversity of lacking knowledge particularly the local contexts to contextualize, and lack of preparation. The irrefutable finding is appealing within the Asian mission study in regard to the essentiality in equipping the Christians so that the ministries in Asia will experience the effectiveness in cultivating the diverse contexts (cultures) with the text (Scripture) they have. Many principles and practical information from this book grew out of the authors' experiences and the reflection of Missiologists and scholars such as Andrew Walls, Christopher Wright, Kazoh Kitamori, Paul Hiebert, etc.

The Bible And Asian Culture

by Nguyen Dinh Anh Nhue, The Bible And Asian Culture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Bible And Asian Culture books, This collective study, directed and edited by nguyen Dinh Anh Nhue in collaboration with Tran Thi Ly and Jb Pham Quy Trong, brings together their three contributions examining various aspects of (re) reading the Bible in Asian cultural context, specifically that of Vietnam. The first contribution studies a speech imparting wisdom from a father to his son in the book of Proverbs (Prov 23:15-28) from an intercultural Ancient Near Eastern and Vietnamese perspective. The second work explores the language of love of the Song of Song and compares it with that of the Vietnamese literary tradition. The third study examines the possibility of inculturating the image of Jesus as the Son of God in the cultural context of Vietnam. The present work, adjudged to be included amongst the winners of the inaugural Carlo Maria Martini International award (2013-2014), opens up new horizons of research for a more fruitful dialogue between the World of God in the Bible and the Vietnamese culture as well as the broader Asian cultural tradition. It launches the research activities of the newly founded Franciscan Institute for Asian Theological Studies (FIATS) in Rome

Theology And The Future

by Trevor Cairney, Theology And The Future Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Theology And The Future books, Theology was once 'queen of the sciences', the integrating centre of Christendom's conceptual universe. In our own time the very idea of systematic theology is frequently called into question, derided as an arcane and superstitious pseudo-discipline. Even within the church, it is commonly disregarded in favour of unreflective piety and pragmatism. At the same time, the southward shift in world Christianity's centre of gravity prompts crucial questions about the future form and content of theology. Within this context, Theology and the Future offers a case for the continuing viability of theology, exploring how it might adapt to changing circumstances, and discussing its implications for how we are to imagine and help shape our shared human future. Beginning with the question of God, this book explores what might be meant by 'the future of God', and what its implications are for Christian theology. Chapters follow on the location of theology (in global Christianity, the church and the academy) and on its sources and method. The second half of the book explores a wide variety of dimensions of the human future that theology might address and illuminate. The essays bring together a mix of specialist theologians and interdisciplinary thinkers to support the assertion that there can be no more critical endeavor to the future than understanding God and all things in relationship to him.
