Suedehead

by Richard Allen, Suedehead Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Suedehead books, Skinheads were dead, man. Phased out. Home had never appealed. All his life he had dreamed about a plush flat somewhere in the West End of London. So now he would make the leap from poverty street into the affluent society. In one gigantic jump. Fresh out of stir after kicking a police sergeant's head in, former skinhead Joe Hawkins is heading for the big time - a job in a firm of stockbrokers, a swanky flat and (hopefully) plenty of money. A whole new style is called for - so Joe becomes a Suedehead. The hair is a few millimetres longer, the uniform a velvet-collared crombie coat, bowler hat and neatly-furled umbrella - with razor sharp tip. For while Joe might be playing the establishment pet, he remains the unrepentently vicious, cunning hooligan from Skinhead, intent on pulling women, stealing and putting the boot in. It's not long before he finds some other Suedes willing to commit mayhem under cover of respectability... but can Joe and respectability ever really get along? Suedehead is the second of Richard Allen's era-defining cult novels featuring anti-hero Joe Hawkins. First published in 1971, this new edition features an introduction by Andrew Stevens. "I did happen to read the book when it came out and I was quite interested in the whole Richard Allen cult... suedeheads and skinheads and smoothies were very much part of daily life. There was a tremendous air of intensity... something interesting grabbed me about the whole thing." Morrissey "(Richard Allen's) work shouldn't require a theoretical summing up, once enough of those to whom it appeals understand its attraction we will have superceded this society." Stewart Home

Tales Of The Smiths A Graphic Biography

by Con Chrisoulis, Tales Of The Smiths A Graphic Biography Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Tales Of The Smiths A Graphic Biography books, There was never a band like The Smiths. Formed at the coalface of a depressed England in 1982, their mix of wit, realism and a wry self-awareness would take them to heights young Morrissey could only dream of from the confines of his dull education, a brutal Manchester upbringing, and the horror of cleaning up body parts as a hospital porter. Climaxing with the release of their first ever single; using interviews and reviews, imagined conversation and peerless artistry; visiting every influence from the New York Dolls to Nico, from Bowie and The Sex Pistols to Patti Smith, Con Chrisoulis brings to brilliant life the troubled teenage years of the unique artists that are Morrissey, Marr, Rourke and Joyce. With a foreword by Si Wolstencroft and an introduction by Johnny Rogan, this is the story of the birth of The Smiths, one of the most influential UK bands, ever. It’s time the tale were told…

Meetings With Morrissey

by Len Brown, Meetings With Morrissey Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Meetings With Morrissey books, Morrissey is one of the most provocative, individual and controversial performers in popular music. From the formation of his Manchester band The Smiths in 1982, through to the imminent release of his 2008 solo album Years Of Refusal, his career has spanned 50 UK Top 40 singles and 20 UK Top 10 albums. Including previously unpublished encounters, Meetings with Morrissey gets behind the public image to tell Morrissey’s story in his own words and explore in fine detail the extraordinary subject matter of his songs. The book offers in-depth insight into the diverse artists Morrissey has celebrated, via lyrics or Smiths’ covers, including Patti Smith, Pat Phoenix, Billy Fury, Marc Bolan, James Dean and The New York Dolls. Above all, it focuses on Morrissey’s lifelong commitment to promoting the genius of Oscar Wilde. Len Brown, a former NME writer and television producer, has interviewed Morrissey more times than any journalist. He first saw The Smiths back in 1983 and became the first writer to interview the artist about the death of his band and the birth of his solo career in 1988.

Back To The Fifties

by Michael D. Dwyer, Back To The Fifties Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Back To The Fifties books, Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Hollywood studios and record companies churned out films, albums, music videos and promotional materials that sought to recapture, revise, and re-imagine the 1950s. Breaking from dominant wisdom that casts the trend as wholly defined by Ronald Reagan's politics or the rise of postmodernism, Back to the Fifties reveals how Fifties nostalgia from 1973 to 1988 was utilized by a range of audiences for diverse and often competing agendas. Films from American Graffiti to Hairspray and popular music from Sha Na Na to Michael Jackson shaped - and were shaped by - the complex social, political and cultural conditions of the Reagan Era. By closely examining the ways that "the Fifties" was remade and recalled, Back to the Fifties explores how cultural memories were fostered for a generation of teenagers trained by popular culture to rewind, record, recycle and replay.

Representations Of Working Class Masculinities In Post War British Culture

by Matthew Crowley, Representations Of Working Class Masculinities In Post War British Culture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Representations Of Working Class Masculinities In Post War British Culture books, This book presents an analysis of representations of white, heterosexual, working-class masculinities in British culture between 1945 and 1989 to trace the development of the sociocultural and material conditions that shaped the masculinities which are helping to shape contemporary culture. This book seeks to fan the ‘spark of hope’ in the past that informs our present. The period which saw the establishment of the welfare state and the construction and breakdown of the post-war consensus in British politics was of great significance in the formation and maintenance of working-class masculinities and their correspondent representations. The author engages with a variety of cultural texts across various modes and media including films (Alfie), plays (Don’t Look Back in Anger), television (Boys from the Blackstuff), and music (The Beatles), and employs the analysis of the representation of working-class masculinities as a lens through which to examine a range of historical and cultural moments. This book reinstates class as a central precept in the study of British cultural representations and offers a timely intervention in ongoing debates around class and gender identities in Britain. The book will be key reading for students and researchers with interests in twentieth-century social and cultural British history, masculinities and gender studies, twentieth-century British literature, British television, and cultural studies more broadly.
