by Brandon D Shuler, New Border Voices Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download New Border Voices books, When the “counter-canon” itself becomes canonized, it’s time to reload. This is the notion that animates New Border Voices, an anthology of recent and rarely seen writing by Borderlands artists from El Paso to Brownsville—and a hundred miles on either side. Challenging the assumption that borderlands writing is the privileged product of the 1970s and ’80s, the vibrant community represented in this collection offers tasty bits of regional fare that will appeal to a wide range of readers and students. Among the contributions are: Introduction A “Southern Renaissance” for Texas Letters —José E. Limón The Texas-Mexico Border: This Writer’s Sense of Place —Rolando Hinojosa-Smith The Rain Parade —Paul Pedroza

Border Culture

by Ilan Stavans, Border Culture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Border Culture books, The border between the United States and Mexico, despite attempts at containment, remains a vast and uniquely malleable yet indefinable region. With Border Culture, Ilan Stavans has collected essays representative of the tangled experiences and issues central to life between cultures. Divided into two sections, Border Culture covers topics essential to better understanding this often misunderstood region and state-of-mind. The first section, "Considerations," culls essays covering socio-economic and political topics illustrating the hyper reality of life and living on La Frontera. Section two, "Testimonios," takes careful consideration of lives affected by the border, either as a finite place, alternate universe, or the framework of the border as a state-of-mind, through various historic and literary accounts of La Frontera. This enlightening and comprehensive collection will no doubt help readers better understand border culture.

Globalisierungs Grenzen

by Christian Berndt, Globalisierungs Grenzen Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Globalisierungs Grenzen books, Was heißt Globalisierung »wirklich«?

Run For The Border

by Steven W. Bender, Run For The Border Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Run For The Border books, Mexico and the United States exist in a symbiotic relationship: Mexico frequently provides the United States with cheap labor, illegal goods, and, for criminal offenders, a refuge from the law. In turn, the U.S. offers Mexican laborers the American dream: the possibility of a better livelihood through hard work. To supply each other’s demands, Americans and Mexicans have to cross their shared border from both sides. Despite this relationship, U.S. immigration reform debates tend to be security-focused and center on the idea of menacing Mexicans heading north to steal abundant American resources. Further, Congress tends to approach reform unilaterally, without engaging with Mexico or other feeder countries, and, disturbingly, without acknowledging problematic southern crossings that Americans routinely make into Mexico. In Run for the Border, Steven W. Bender offers a framework for a more comprehensive border policy through a historical analysis of border crossings, both Mexico to U.S. and U.S. to Mexico. In contrast to recent reform proposals, this book urges reform as the product of negotiation and implementation by cross-border accord; reform that honors the shared economic and cultural legacy of the U.S. and Mexico. Covering everything from the history of Anglo crossings into Mexico to escape law authorities, to vice tourism and retirement in Mexico, to today’s focus on Mexican border-crossing immigrants and drug traffickers, Bender takes lessons from the past 150 years to argue for more explicit and compassionate cross-border cooperation. Steeped in several disciplines, Run for the Border is a blend of historical, cultural, and legal perspectives, as well as those from literature and cinema, that reflect Bender’s cultural background and legal expertise.

The Candy Machine

by Tom Feiling, The Candy Machine Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Candy Machine books, Cocaine is big business and getting bigger. Governments spend millions on an unwinnable war against it, yet it's now the drug of choice in the West. How did the cocaine economy get so huge? Who keeps it running behind the scenes? In The Candy Machine Tom Feiling travels the trade routes from Colombia via Miami, Kingston and Tijuana to London and New York. He meets Medillin hitmen, US kingpins, Brazilian traffickers, and talks to soldiers and narcotics officers who fight the gangs and cartels. He traces cocaine's progress from legal 'pick-me-up' to luxury product to global commodity, looks at legalization programmes in countries such as Switzerland, and shows how America's anti-drugs crusade is actually increasing demand. Cutting through the myths about the white market, this is the story of cocaine as it's never been told before.
