Linguistic Complexity And Text Comprehension

by Alice Davison, Linguistic Complexity And Text Comprehension Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Linguistic Complexity And Text Comprehension books, Standard readability formulas are widely accepted as reliable means of determining text difficulty for readers. This book examines the shortcomings of these formulas, both for professionals who try to use these formulas to match texts with readers and for others who study how language is understood. Language comprehension experts in cognitive psychology, education, and linguistics present alternative viewpoints concerning the issue of effective readability predictors. The long-term result: new questions raised by the research in this book should help to make texts more comprehensible and to provide a theoretically sound model of language processing and interpretation.

Text Complexity And Reading Comprehension Tests

by Erik Castello, Text Complexity And Reading Comprehension Tests Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Text Complexity And Reading Comprehension Tests books, Based on the analysis of a specially compiled corpus of internationally recognized English as a foreign language (EFL) reading tests at different levels of proficiency, this volume explores the relation between the complexity of written texts and the difficulty of reading comprehension tests. It brings together linguistic investigations into the text-inherent complexity of the tests and a study of the data derived from their administration to groups of Italian university students. The study of text complexity draws on corpus linguistics, text linguistics and systemic functional linguistics. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses are carried out on the language used in the reading texts and in the related tasks that make up the corpus of tests. The assessment of test difficulty, on the other hand, is informed by research on language testing, and, in particular, by findings and methodologies of Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory. Relevant aspects of these theories are used to analyze and interpret both the data obtained from the administration of the tests and the data collected by means of feedback questionnaires completed by test takers. The application of such diverse methodologies and the subsequent comparison of the results of the analyses has brought out interesting correlations between text-inherent complexity, perceived test difficulty and actual test difficulty.

Die Sprache Des Rechts

by Kent D. Lerch, Die Sprache Des Rechts Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format.

Verstehen Und Verst Ndlichkeit Von Politikersprache

by Jan Kercher, Verstehen Und Verst Ndlichkeit Von Politikersprache Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format.

Textverstehen

by Hans Strohner, Textverstehen Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format.

Consociation And Dissociation

by Christina Sanchez, Consociation And Dissociation Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Consociation And Dissociation books, Since the middle of the twentieth century it has been widely believed that English words are less integrated into word families than German words. Ernst Leisi attributed this so-called dissociation to the large proportion of Romance words that have entered the originally Germanic English language in the course of its history. Even though fairly common, these hypotheses have not yet been tested empirically. This book thus presents a long-due study which subjects the 2,500 most frequent English and German lemmas to various analyses. For instance, they are analysed into constituents to which they are both formally and semantically related. In addition, morphosemantically related complex words containing the English and German list items are sought for. The approach adopted here, which considers a variety of variables such as formal differences and semantic obstacles, allows for a highly differentiated answer to the question whether the English vocabulary is dissociated or not. The last part of the book discusses the relevance of the study's surprising results with respect to the mental lexicon as well as language learning and teaching.

The Influence Of First And Second Language Use On The Comprehension And Recall Of Written English Texts By Japanese Readers

by Thomas Albin Upton, The Influence Of First And Second Language Use On The Comprehension And Recall Of Written English Texts By Japanese Readers Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Influence Of First And Second Language Use On The Comprehension And Recall Of Written English Texts By Japanese Readers books, The advanced ESL subjects used their L1 more when wrestling with L2 vocabulary and sentence meaning, and also used their L1 more frequently than post-ESL subjects to confirm their comprehension than did post-ESL subjects. Comparison of the think-aloud and retrospective data collected in this study with the recall protocol data collected by Bernhardt (1986) support the components of the constructivist model of reading comprehension, but much more clearly reflect the interactive and inferential nature of the reading process.

Second Language Lexical Acquisition

by Christina Gitsaki, Second Language Lexical Acquisition Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Second Language Lexical Acquisition books, This study examines the development of collocational knowledge in learners of ESL (English as a Second Language). The study adopts a structure-based framework for the study of collocations based on previous studies (Zhang 1993; Biscup 1992) and the BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English, and attempts to describe how collocational knowledge develops across different language proficiency levels with respect to 37 collocation types. Data were collected from 275 Greek learners of ESL at three proficiency levels (post-beginners, intermediate, and post-intermediate) using three tasks: essay writing, translation test, and blank-filling. Pedagogical implications and directions for future research are provided in light of the research findings.
