Frog Moon

by Lola Lemire Tostevin, Frog Moon Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Frog Moon books, Frog Moon combines oral tradition, myth, language, literature, legends, and classic tales to forge one woman's singular history. The contradiction between French and English, between the silent and the censoring world of the convent, the make-believe world of books and folk tales, various locales of northern Ontario, Toronto, and Paris, all collapse into each other in this hybrid novel of stories that reflect the social and cultural dynamics of a woman's heritage. Through textual layering, Tostevin achieves a sense of diversity of purpose and branching growth from a multiplicity of places, voices and traditions, creating a rich tapestry, the colours of which are very much Tostevin's own.

The Original Buddhist Psychology

by Beth Jacobs, Ph.D., The Original Buddhist Psychology Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Original Buddhist Psychology books, Drawing on decades of experience, a psychotherapist and Zen practitioner makes the Abhidharma--the original psychological system of Buddhism--accessible to a general audience for the first time. The Abhidharma, one of the three major text collections of the original Buddhist canon, explores the critical juncture of Buddhist thought and the therapeutic aspects of the religion and meditation. It frames the psychological system of Buddhism, explaining the workings of reality and the nature of the human mind. Composed of detailed matrixes and lists that outline the interaction of consciousness and reality, The Abhidharma explores the essence of perception and experience, and the reasons and methods behind mindfulness and meditation. Because of its complexity, the Abhidharma has traditionally been reserved only for academic or monastic study; now, for the first time, clinical psychologist Beth Jacobs makes this dynamic, important text and its teachings available to general readers, using practical explanation, personal stories, and vivid examples to gently untangle the technical aspects of the Abhidharma. Jacobs’ work illuminates this classic of Buddhist thought, highlighting the ways it can broaden and deepen our experience of the human psyche and offering profound insights into spiritual practice.

Writing In The Feminine In French And English Canada

by Marie J. Carrière, Writing In The Feminine In French And English Canada Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Writing In The Feminine In French And English Canada books, This important work considers the contemporary movement of "writing in the feminine", by examining the work of five women writers from French and English Canada and the dialogue therein with feminist and psychoanalytic theory and theories of ethics. Informing the author's interpretations are the ideas of French theorists Emmanuel Levinas, Paul Ricoeur, Luce Irigaray, and Julia Kristeva, as well as American feminists Kelly Oliver and Jessica Benjamin. Marie Carrière explores the unfolding, complex questions of sexual difference, female subjectivity, and mother-daughter relations. She also uncovers and examines the occasional breakdown of the feminist ethics postulated by Nicole Brossard, France Theoret, Di Brandt, Erin Mouré, and Lola Lemire Tostevin. Carrière views these instances of deviation not as a failure of writing in the feminine, but as an inevitability in the relatively new intellectual terrain of feminist ethics. Writing in the Feminine will be of great interest to scholars of literary theory, women's studies, and Canadian literature in French and English. As a challenging study of the connections between gender and authorship, it will also appeal to those who have a particular interest in women's literature.

Chehalis Stories

by Jolynn Amrine Goertz, Chehalis Stories Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Chehalis Stories books, Published through the Recovering Languages and Literacies of the Americas initiative, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation In Chehalis Stories Jolynn Amrine Goertz and the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation in Western Washington have assembled a collaborative volume of traditional stories collected by the anthropologist Franz Boas from tribal knowledge keepers in the early twentieth century. Both Boas and Amrine Goertz worked with past and present elders, including Robert Choke, Marion Davis, Peter Heck, Blanche Pete Dawson, and Jonas Secena, in collecting and contextualizing traditional knowledge of the Chehalis people. The elders shared stories with Boas at a critical juncture in Chehalis history, when assimilation efforts during the 1920s affected almost every aspect of Chehalis life. These are stories of transformation, going away, and coming back. The interwoven adventures of tricksters and transformers in Coast Salish narratives recall the time when people and animals lived together in the Chehalis River Valley. Catastrophic floods, stolen children, and heroic rescues poignantly evoke the resiliency of the people who have carried these stories for generations. Working with contemporary Chehalis people, Amrine Goertz has extensively reviewed the work of anthropologists in western Washington. This important collection examines the methodologies, shortcomings, and limitations of anthropologists' relationship with Chehalis people and presents complementary approaches to field work and its contextualization.
