Oroonoko

by Susan B. Iwanisziw, Oroonoko Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Oroonoko books, With the aim of examining the postcolonial applications of Aphra Behn's re-entry into the literary canon, the editor presents this edition as a collection representing the nexus of very specific articulations of literary, cultural, and political tropes produced by various writers and adapters from 1695 through 1999. The volume begins with a general introduction. It then presents seven 18th-century versions of the play and one poem, ending with 'Biyi Bandele's late 20th-century drama. All texts are supplemented by original paratextual commentary, if that is known, and prefaced by a brief editorial commentary setting out pertinent biographical, bibliographical, theatrical, and historical context not covered in the general introduction. The tradition of stage adaptations of Oroonoko, most of them keyed to Southerne's drama rather than to Behn's initial novella, clearly shows the responsiveness of this series to studies of authorship, gender, genre and theatricality, class, race, and, especially, the British response to the Atlantic slave trade, and, thus, to the enduring relevance of these plays in modern literary and historical scholarship.

Exotic Nations

by Renata Wasserman, Exotic Nations Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Exotic Nations books, In this highly original and critically informed book, Renata R. Mautner Wasserman looks at how, during the first decades following political independence, writers in the United States and Brazil assimilated and subverted European images of an "exotic" New World to create new literatures that asserted cultural independence and defined national identity. Exotic Nations demonstrates that the language of exoticism thus became part of the New World’s interpretation of its own history and natural environment.

In seinem schmerzhaften, leidenschaftlichen Manifest verdichtet Ta-Nehisi Coates amerikanische und persönliche Geschichte zu einem Appell an sein Land, sich endlich seiner Vergangenheit zu stellen. The Ethnobotany Of Eden

by Robert A. Voeks, The Ethnobotany Of Eden Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Ethnobotany Of Eden books, In the mysterious and pristine forests of the tropics, a wealth of ethnobotanical panaceas and shamanic knowledge promises cures for everything from cancer and AIDS to the common cold. To access such miracles, we need only to discover and protect these medicinal treasures before they succumb to the corrosive forces of the modern world. A compelling biocultural story, certainly, and a popular perspective on the lands and peoples of equatorial latitudes—but true? Only in part. In The Ethnobotany of Eden, geographer Robert A. Voeks unravels the long lianas of history and occasional strands of truth that gave rise to this irresistible jungle medicine narrative. By exploring the interconnected worlds of anthropology, botany, and geography, Voeks shows that well-intentioned scientists and environmentalists originally crafted the jungle narrative with the primary goal of saving the world’s tropical rainforests from destruction. It was a strategy deployed to address a pressing environmental problem, one that appeared at a propitious point in history just as the Western world was taking a more globalized view of environmental issues. And yet, although supported by science and its practitioners, the story was also underpinned by a persuasive mix of myth, sentimentality, and nostalgia for a long-lost tropical Eden. Resurrecting the fascinating history of plant prospecting in the tropics, from the colonial era to the present day, The Ethnobotany of Eden rewrites with modern science the degradation narrative we’ve built up around tropical forests, revealing the entangled origins of our fables of forest cures.

Teaching What We Do

by Richard Todd, Teaching What We Do Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Teaching What We Do books, What goes on in a college classroom? For all that has been written in recent years about higher education very little attention has been paid to the heart of the matter: teaching. This book, by members of the Amherst College faculty, helps to repair that oversight. Amherst, in defining itself, places a large emphasis, as it should, on the life of the classroom. No faculty member, no matter how senior, is excused from teaching; no cadre of graduate students shoulders the load of introductory courses. To teach is the central mission of an Amherst professor. But seldom the only mission. Almost everyone who teaches at Amherst also pursues research. Maintaining the balance is sometimes frustrating--but more often nourishing and exhilarating. In his foreword, Peter R. Pouncey speaks of the way in which teaching and research cross-fertilize each other. He writes of the rejuvenating invitation of the classroom: to confront the mild curiosity of the good-natured young, and see it rise, in the face of your own interests and insistences, first to eagerness and then to the sort of passion you remember, and hope to sustain, in yourself. Again and again these essays--by artist, historian, critic, and scientist--demonstrate that the pleasures and challenges of the classroom are inexhaustible. And they provide us with glimpses of the true importance of the work that is done there. As Professor Benjamin DeMott writes, in a successful class the student is free to develop a thought, to work up its implications, to be unhurriedly serious about serious things in the company of attentive others. At a time when the academy is under fire from various sides, the reader will emerge from this book informed and heartened by its vision of the possibilities for higher education.
