Excerpt: The double bass, also called the string bass, upright bass, standup bass or contrabass, is the largest and lowest-pitched bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra, with strings usually tuned to E1, A1, D2 and G2 (see standard tuning). The double bass is a standard member of the string section of the symphony orchestra and smaller string ensembles in Western classical music. In addition, it is used in other genres such as jazz, 1950s-style blues and rock and roll, rockabilly/psychobilly, traditional country music, bluegrass, tango and many types of folk music. A person who plays the double bass is usually referred to as a bassist. The double bass stands around 180 cm (six feet) from scroll to endpin, and is typically constructed from several types of wood, including maple for the back, spruce for the top, and ebony for the fingerboard. It is uncertain whether the instrument is a descendant of the viola da gamba or of the violin, but it is traditionally aligned with the violin family. While the double bass is nearly identical in construction to other violin family instruments, it also embodies features found in the older viol family. Like many other string instruments, the double bass is played either with...

The Thumb Transition Zone

by Chris Kosky, The Thumb Transition Zone Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Thumb Transition Zone books, For intermediate and advanced bassists, The Thumb Transition Zone tackles the fingering quagmire of the middle area of the Double Bass fingerboard. This method turns awkward into easy by providing exercises and etudes that give the bassist's left hand the options needed to play effortlessly and more musically around the shoulders of the instrument. Advanced players will find a solution to fingering in this traditionally tricky part of the fingerboard, while intermediate-level bassists, those just getting near and into Thumb Position, can learn an easier way around right from the beginning.

Chapters: Aladar Pege, Alex Blake, Art Davis, Buster Williams, Charles Fambrough, Charles Mingus, Charlie Haden, David Shapiro (musician), Eberhard Weber, Edgar Willis, Eldee Young, Henri Texier, Palle Danielsson, Paolo Damiani, Richard Davis (double bassist), Rodney Whitaker, Ron Carter. Excerpt: Charles Mingus Jr. (April 22, 1922 - January 5, 1979) was a highly-influential American jazz double bassist, composer and bandleader. Mingus's compositions retained the hot and soulful feel of hard bop and drew heavily from black gospel music while sometimes drawing on elements of Third Stream, free jazz, and classical music. Yet Mingus avoided categorization, forging his own brand of music that fused tradition with unique and unexplored realms of jazz. He once cited Duke Ellington and church as his main influences. Mingus focused on collective improvisation, similar to the old New Orleans jazz parades, paying particular attention to how each band member interacted with the group as a whole. In creating his bands, Mingus looked not only at the skills of the available musicians, but also their personalities. Many musicians passed through his bands and later went on to impressive careers. He recruited talented and sometimes little-known artists whom he assembled into unconventional and revealing configurations. As a performer, Mingus was a pioneer in double bass technique, widely recognized as one of the instrument's most proficient players. Nearly as well known as his ambitious music was Mingus' often fearsome temperament, which earned him the nickname "The Angry Man of Jazz." His refusal to compromise his musical integrity led to many on-stage eruptions, exhortations to musicians, and dismissals. Because of his brilliant writing for mid-size ensembles-and his catering to and emphasizing the strengths of the musicians in his...

The Baroque Double Bass Violone

by Alfred Planyavsky, The Baroque Double Bass Violone Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Baroque Double Bass Violone books, In the nineteenth century, use of the violone, a bass instrument with many sizes and variations, was nearly eliminated from musical repertoires, and its traditional parts were parceled out to other instruments such as the violoncello. The following phases of revival of the double-bass have been hampered by a lack of physical evidence and diligent research into the historical uses of the instrument. The Baroque Double Bass Violone is a comprehensive study that examines a cross-section of standard works to enhance contemporary violone research, and provide information for musicologists, music publishers, ensemble leaders, and revivalists, all of whom have been unable to reconstruct an essential part of Baroque music. This translation finally makes the most exhaustive study of the double bass violone accessible to English-speaking musical enthusiasts. The book includes lists of terminology, the most comprehensive bibliography to date, and 48 illustrations that make this a compendium of string bass research.
