The Civil Rights Movement In America

by Charles W. Eagles, The Civil Rights Movement In America Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Civil Rights Movement In America books, The Civil Rights Movement warrants continuing and extensive examination. The six papers in this collection, each supplemented by a follow-up assessment, contribute to a clearer perception of what caused and motivated the movement, of how it functioned, of the changes that occurred within it, and of its accomplishments and shortcomings. Its profound effect upon modern America has so greatly changed relations between the races that C. Vann Woodward has called it the second revolution. In a limited space the eleven scholars range with a definitive view over a large subject. Their papers analyze and emphasize the Civil Rights Movement's important aspects: its origins and causes, its strategies and tactics for accomplishing black freedom, the creative tensions in its leadership, the politics of the movement in the key state of Mississippi, and the role of federal law and federal courts. In this collection a scholarly balance is achieved for each paper by a follow-up commentary from a significant authority. By deepening the understanding of the Civil Rights Movement, these essays underscore what has been gained through struggle, as well as acknowledging the goals that are yet to be attained.

Civil Rights In The Usa

by Sarah Mirams, Civil Rights In The Usa Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Civil Rights In The Usa books, CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE USA has been developed especially for senior secondary students of History and is part of the Nelson Modern History series. Each book in the series is based on the understanding that History is an interpretive study of the past by which you also come to better appreciate the making of the modern world. In many of the southern states of the United States of America, buses were divided so that white passengers sat at the front and black passengers sat at the back. When the white sections were full, black passengers were expected to give up their seats for white passengers. Black passengers paid at the front of the bus, but had to enter at the back, no matter what the weather. White bus drivers could, without explanation, eject black passengers from buses. In Montgomery, Alabama, on 1 December 1955, Rosa Parks, a 42-year-old seamstress, refused to give up her seat to a standing white man. Parks was arrested at the next stop for disobeying the municipal rule of compulsory segregation on buses. Parks' individual act triggered one of the most successful campaigns of the Civil Rights movement in the United States. Developing understandings of the past and present in senior History extends on the skills you learnt in earlier years. As senior students you will use historical skills, including research, evaluation, synthesis, analysis and communication, and the historical concepts, such as evidence, continuity and change, cause and effect, significance, empathy, perspectives and contestability, to understand and interpret societies from the past. The activities and tasks in CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE USA have been written to ensure that you develop the skills and attributes you need in senior History subjects.

by Robert Cook, Sweet Land Of Liberty Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Sweet Land Of Liberty books, A powerful and moving account of the campaign for civil rights in modern America. Robert Cook is concerned less with charismatic leaders like Martin Luther King, and more with the ordinary men and women who were mobilised by the grass-roots activities of civil-rights workers and community leaders. He begins with the development of segregation in the late nineteenth century, but his main focus is on the continuing struggle this century. It is a dramatic story of many achievements - even if in many respects it is also a record of unfinished business.

Civil Rights In America

by Christopher W. Schmidt, Civil Rights In America Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Civil Rights In America books, "This book revolves around a deceptively simple question: What do we mean when we say that something is an issue of civil rights? Americans use the term all the time. We have government agencies dedicated to protecting civil rights. We know the heroic struggle for racial equality of the 1960s as the civil rights movement. We're now supposedly in a postcivil rights era - even as we're constantly on the watch for new civil rights movements. We identify certain people as civil rights icons. We declare public officials good or bad on civil rights. All of this assumes "civil rights" includes certain things and not others. But look up the term in a dictionary or legal reference work and you'll find a mix of abstractions and stilted legalisms, none of which captures the depth and complexity of meaning that is conveyed with its invocation and none of which hints at historic and ongoing struggles over its contents"--
