Multiple modes of communication used between characters are presented and the multilevel tapestry of communication in the series is critical in its appeal. This book proposes that these patterns of communication reveal a foundational philosophy of Star Trek (while enticing millions of viewers). These patterns serve both to cause strong empathetic connections with characters and to impel viewers to form relationships with the show, explaining their extreme devotion.

Screening Stephen King

by Simon Brown, Screening Stephen King Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Screening Stephen King books, Since the 1970s, the name Stephen King has been synonymous with horror. His vast number of books has spawned a similar number of feature films and TV shows, and together they offer a rich opportunity to consider how one writer’s work has been adapted over a long period within a single genre and across a variety of media—and what that can tell us about King, about adaptation, and about film and TV horror. Starting from the premise that King has transcended ideas of authorship to become his own literary, cinematic, and televisual brand, Screening Stephen King explores the impact and legacy of over forty years of King film and television adaptations. Simon Brown first examines the reasons for King’s literary success and then, starting with Brian De Palma’s Carrie, explores how King’s themes and style have been adapted for the big and small screens. He looks at mainstream multiplex horror adaptations from Cujo to Cell, low-budget DVD horror films such as The Mangler and Children of the Corn franchises, non-horror films, including Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption, and TV works from Salem’s Lot to Under the Dome. Through this discussion, Brown identifies what a Stephen King film or series is or has been, how these works have influenced film and TV horror, and what these influences reveal about the shifting preoccupations and industrial contexts of the post-1960s horror genre in film and TV.

Eraserhead The David Lynch Files Volume 1

by Kenneth George Godwin, Eraserhead The David Lynch Files Volume 1 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Eraserhead The David Lynch Files Volume 1 books, “An invaluable resource on the making of Eraserhead, Godwin’s book includes interviews with the cast and crew conducted when memories were still fresh.” - David Lynch & Kristine McKenna, Room to Dream As a young artist working with minimal resources, aided by a dedicated cast and crew, David Lynch spent four-and-a-half years making his first feature. The result was a completely unique, darkly comic nightmare called Eraserhead. Carefully nurtured by distributor Libra Films, Eraserhead gradually developed a passionate audience despite a very mixed response from critics. It took four years for the film to reach Winnipeg, Canada, but when it finally did it took hold of writer Kenneth George Godwin’s imagination. Determined to understand the nature of the film’s power, Godwin wrote the first in-depth analysis of Eraserhead. That essay led to a commission to write an article forthe magazine Cinefantastique. For the first time, the secretive Lynch agreed to tell the full story of the film’s production. Gathered together in this volume are the original essay, the complete, unedited production history, and full transcripts of all the interviews Godwin conducted with Lynch himself and members of the cast and crew of Eraserhead. “Among the commentaries which Eraserhead has inspired, it is worth mentioning George Godwin’s most interesting comments ... a must for the Lynchmaniac” - Michel Chion, David Lynch “David Lynch’s first work has become a cult film, but its bizarre imagery has never before received a cogent interpretation” - Film Quarterly

Invasion Usa

by David J. Hogan, Invasion Usa Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Invasion Usa books, In 1947 and again in 1951, when the queasy wartime alliance of the United States and the Soviet Union was long dissolved into mutual suspicion, the House Un-American Activities Committee launched aggressive investigations of Communist activity in the Hollywood film industry. If millions of worried Americans became preoccupied with subversion directed by the many-tentacled "Red Menace," Hollywood studio chiefs were absolutely petrified. Fearful of profit-killing scandal that might be uncovered by Washington's heavy hand, Hollywood scrambled to display its patriotism by producing anti-Communist movies. The films came by the score, some sober and thoughtful, others wildly hysterical. Cold War audiences were fed anti-Red dramas, melodramas, science-fiction thrillers--even comedies, westerns, and animated cartoons. In twenty-one lively essays, sixteen widely published film historians scrutinize more than forty films from the anti-Red cycle of the 1950s and '60s, including many provocative examples that have fallen into undeserved obscurity. Concerned equally with the pictures' aesthetic, political, and social ramifications, the essays capture the essence not only of some remarkable movies, but the frightened, agitated historical period that spawned them.
