A Feminine Ending

by Sarah Treem, A Feminine Ending Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Feminine Ending books, Full Length, Dark Comedy 3m., 2f. Various, Unit set Amanda, twenty-five, wants to be a great composer. But at the moment, she's living in New York City and writing advertising jingles to pay the rent while her fianc, Jack, pursues his singing career. So when Amanda's mother, Kim, calls one evening from New Hampshire and asks for her help with something she can't discuss over the phone, Amanda is only too happy to leave New York. Once home, Kim reveals that she's leaving Amanda's father and needs help packing. Amanda balks and ends up (gently) hitting the postman, who happens to be her first boyfriend. They spend the night together in an apple orchard, where Amanda tries to tell Billy how her life got sidetracked. It has something to do with being a young woman in a profession that only recognizes famous men. Billy acts like he might have the answer, but doesn't. Neither does Amanda's mother. Or, for that matter, her father. A Feminine Ending is a gentle, bittersweet comedy about a girl who knows what she wants but not quite how to get it. Her parents are getting divorced, her fiance is almost famous, her first love reappears, and there's a lot of noise in her head but none of it is music. Until the end. Ending is a promising beginning...the playwright has a sense of humor that brings to mind a budding Wendy Wasserstein and a liberated sense of form that evokes a junior Paula Vogel.-Los Angeles Times Darkly comic. FEMININE ENDING has undeniable wit. -New York Post. Appealingly outlandish humor. -The New York Times. Courageous. The 90-minute piece swerves with nerve and naivete. Sarah Treem has a voice all her own. -Newsday.

Feminine Endings

by Susan McClary, Feminine Endings Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Feminine Endings books, When it was originally published in 1991, Feminine Endings was immediately controversial for its unprecedented intermingling of cultural criticism and musical studies, an approach that came to be called "the New Musicology." Through case studies of works ranging from the canonical -- operas by Monteverdi and Bizet -- to the contemporary -- the performance art of Diamanda Galas and popular songs by Madonna -- Susan McClary focuses on the ways music produces images of gender, desire, pleasure, and the body, and explores the gender-based metaphors that circulate in discourse about music. The now classic work features a new introduction that discusses the critical reception it received and the debates it has inspired.

The Rules For The Gender Of French Nouns

by Saul H. Rosenthal, The Rules For The Gender Of French Nouns Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Rules For The Gender Of French Nouns books, Do you wonder why an arm is masculine while a leg is feminine? Why your sofa is masculine but your chair is feminine? And why should a person or victim always be feminine, even if the person or victim you're talking about happens to be a man? And isn't it odd that "masculinit" is feminine? The illogic of French gender can be very frustrating. But after reading this book, if you see words like "croisement, pays, vin, " or "chocolat, " you will instantly know they are masculine, and you will also immediately recognize that words like "ville, facture, maladie, " and "essence" are feminine.

Shakespeare S Feminine Endings

by Philippa Berry, Shakespeare S Feminine Endings Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Shakespeare S Feminine Endings books, Philippa Berry draws on feminist theory, postmodern thought and queer theory, to challenge existing critical notions of what is fundamental to Shakespearean tragedy. She shows how, through a network of images clustered around feminine or feminized characters, these plays 'disfigure' conventional ideas of death as a bodily end, as their figures of women are interwoven with provocative meditations upon matter, time, the soul, and the body. The scope of these tragic speculations was radical in Shakespeare's day; yet they also have a surprising relevance to contemporary debates about time and matter in science and philosophy.

Feminine Endings

by Vernon Scannell, Feminine Endings Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Feminine Endings books, Vernon Scannell's witty and absorbing novel is set at Crackenthorpe Hall, a creative-writing centre in the North of England. A group of would-be poets of various ages, sexes and backgrounds arrive there to spend a week under the tutelage of two established poets. Some of the students are present for bizarre reasons unconnected with the art of poetry. The characterisation and plot are gripping but the novel is essentially a penetrating satire on the contemporary poetry scene and it includes brilliant parodies and pastiches of the work of many well-known literary figures of our time.

Linguistic Ties Between Ancient Egyptian And Bantu

by Fergus Sharman, Linguistic Ties Between Ancient Egyptian And Bantu Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Linguistic Ties Between Ancient Egyptian And Bantu books, This book provides a unique perspective on the linguistic relationships between the Ancient Egyptian and Bantu languages of East/Central/Southern Africa. It will be of interest to readers of Egyptology, linguists, students, and the wider public who wish to find out more about the structure of the Ancient Egyptian language and how it connects with other languages, particularly with Bantu languages. The subject matter is different from other books as it examines the etymology of words, together with their sound/meaning relationships and shows by using verifiable hieroglyphic forms how Ancient Egyptian words may be pronounced by inserting Bantu vowels which fit the meanings derived from the skeletal templates of consonants in the Ancient Egyptian language.

The Syro Aramaic Reading Of The Koran

by Christoph Luxenberg, The Syro Aramaic Reading Of The Koran Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Syro Aramaic Reading Of The Koran books, Throughout its history the Koran has presented problems of interpretation. Some scholars estimate that at least a quarter of the text is obscure in meaning, not only for Western translators but even native Arabic speakers, who struggle with the archaic vocabulary that is no longer used in modern Arabic. In this in-depth study of the language of the Koran, scholar Christoph Luxenberg dispels much of the mystery surrounding numerous hitherto unclear passages. The key, as Luxenberg shows exhaustively, is to understand that Aramaic--the language of most Middle Eastern Jews and Christians of the pre-Islamic era--had a pervasive influence on the development of the Arabic text of the Koran. For a thousand years preceding the advent of Islam, Aramaic (or Syriac as it was sometimes called) was the lingua franca of many parts of the Near East. It was the native language of the first Christian evangelists and the main liturgical language of the early Christian churches from Syria to Iran. Based on this historical context and a profound knowledge of Semitic languages, Luxenberg clarifies many thorny textual puzzles. Perhaps his most interesting argument is that the passage often translated as referring to the "virgins" that are believed to greet the departed faithful in paradise was long ago misunderstood. In fact, knowledge of ancient Christian hymns in Aramaic suggests that the word in question refers to "grapes" that the departed will enjoy in a paradisiacal garden. Luxenberg discusses many other similar fascinating instances where Aramaic vocabulary and concepts influenced the text of the Koran This highly erudite work makes a significant contribution to the study of the Koran and the history of Islamic origins.
