“Black Girl, Smile” (Poem)

Hey, Black Girl! You’d better Smile

It’s Been a Long While.

I know,

it’s been hard.

Nobody knows your journey

No one knows your story

They think that we are all the same

They think that all we want to do is complain

They don’t see our strife

Our grind

Our passions and belief

That things

CAN ONE DAY, CHANGE-

Hey Black Girl, Smile

I better see a change in your face

No need to worry about yesterday

Those dreams you get lost in a lot

If you can see it

Then make it happen

It’s time

Come on, take your shot

And don’t wait for anybody to gift you a chance, for perfect timing, or convenience

Let’s Work NOW, Today

Hey Black Girl, Smile

You are GOING to make it

You are going to

Create it

Cultivate it-

Ignite a revolution

And light the spark to the future That you ARE anticipating

To partake in

Prepare to Participate!

Because YOU DO MATTER

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Look in the mirror,

Never let em’ tell you that what you have to offer is worthless.

OR

Unattractive

Unappealing

Or not desired

Or Unappreciated

NEVER be that foolish!

You ARE the hottest commodity

That breaks necks when peasants, friends, critics and fans come about in your presence

But you MUST

RISE to that Occasion-

Black Girl, you must wipe your tears

I know it’s hard

You thought the road would be easier

A lot simpler

But guess what, Black Girl

You are STILL HERE

So, what you gone do, then?

Show me what you working with…

Smile-

I better see a change in your face

Let the world know that you came on a Mission

And Have NO TIME TO PLAY -”
