Death as a Friend – A Poem About Suicide

Death, as a Friend

I forgive you, Mental Illness.

Because we have come a long way.

We found each other in the darkness

And became in sync

There was no me without you and no you without me

My best friend

My enemy.

I forgive you for existing.

You are my life.

You define me.

You were the first to ever speak.

You held my hand so softly,

On nights when I knew that I could not properly tighten the knots on the noose

Around my neck

You stood beside me as my legs dangled over the water by the ledge

On Ann Arbor Trail

GOD was around, somewhere

But I could not hear him.

It was just me and you.

You always told me to go to sleep when I was feeling

lonely and blue.

But then, I broke your trust

I abandoned our love.

And then, I woke up

I woke up
